Play With Kids in the Pool

I spent about three hours with my two younger children (three and seven years old) at the community aquatic center today.

Whew!

Why is it so exhausting to spend a couple of hours splashing around with kids in a pool? Is it the sun? The heat? They're part of the equation, but if you are playing with active kids and moving even a fraction as much as they are, it's because playing in the pool is one of the most efficient aerobic workouts you can get.

What makes it so great has to do with the physical properties of the water. The water puts equally distributed pressure on every inch of your body. And that pressure is progressive - the more you push against it, the harder it pushes back. But it also forces you to move with fluidity and deliberate, controlled rhythm. No other form of resistance has these qualities.

So, the bottom line is that everything is working at the same time, so you get pooped!

Try it yourself some time in the next couple of weeks and see for yourself. Then go home and take a nice, long nap!
